Grass TEC 861 MDF hinge is a concealed cabinet hinge from Grass America designed specifically for MDF face frame material. The TEC 861 MDF material face frame hinge uses a patented wrap around base plate engineered for MDF face frame material, which supports the material during use. This hinge is a self-close 5/8 inch overlay face-frame hinge in nickel with a 108 degree opening angle, giving typical cabinet doors a wide swing while still pulling the door shut at the end of travel. The hinge is part of the concealed face frame hinges product class, so it stays out of sight when the cabinet door is closed. This version is identified by manufacturer part 04743-14 and SAP description TEC 861VS8 (93) 1/2' OL 5/8' MDF DOWEL, which helps match it to documented shop drawings and purchasing systems.
The Grass TEC 861 MDF hinge uses a doweled cup cabinet attachment, which sets the cup position positively in the door for consistent hinge alignment across multiple doors. The web description specifies use of #8 x 3/4 inch pan head screw to mount the hinge to the face frame, giving a clear screw size for drilling and driving operations in the shop or on site. It also specifies #6 x 5/8 inch flat head screws to attach the hinge cup to the door, tying the screw length and head style to the door side of the installation. The manufacturer notes that all metal construction exceeds industry standards for weight and closing cycles, which supports long service life in cabinets that are opened and closed frequently.
The TEC 861 MDF material face frame hinge is described as having a patented wrap around base plate specifically designed for use with MDF face frame material, which makes it suited to cabinets built with MDF frames rather than solid wood. The hinge is a self-close 5/8 inch overlay face-frame hinge, so it fits projects laid out with a 5/8 inch overlay between the door edge and the MDF face frame opening. The available information states that order hinge based on MDF frame thickness and that three specific MDF thickness hinges are available: 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch, allowing selection that matches the face frame thickness in a given job.
This version is identified in the product name as a 5/8 inch overlay configuration, aligning with MDF cabinet designs that require that overlay dimension on face frames. The hinge belongs to the concealed face frame hinges category, so it supports jobs where a hidden hinge look is preferred, while still meeting the mechanical needs of MDF face frame construction. Being made in USA with all metal construction that exceeds industry standards for weight and closing cycles, it supports commercial or residential cabinet applications where hinges experience frequent operation.
The TEC 861 MDF material face frame hinge uses a patented wrap around base plate, and the manufacturer states this design helps prevent material splitting, which is important when driving screws into MDF face frames that can otherwise fracture under load. The specification that order hinge based on MDF frame thickness, with three specific MDF thickness hinges available in 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch, allows shops to match hinge geometry to face frame thickness for consistent reveals and overlay results across a run of cabinets.
The hinge is noted as available with doweled cup cabinet attachment only, so the dowel-based cup location helps keep drilling patterns consistent and speeds repetition on multiple doors that share the same boring pattern. The recommended #8 x 3/4 inch pan head screw for mounting to the face frame and #6 x 5/8 inch flat head screws for the hinge cup provide defined fastener sizes, which supports jig setup, tool selection, and predictable holding strength. The all metal construction exceeding industry standards for weight and closing cycles gives confidence that the hinge mechanism will continue to self-close and hold the door over many operating cycles.
