When a range hood cannot vent to the outside, the charcoal filter does the work of capturing cooking odors before the air is returned to the kitchen.
A ductless ventilation setup pulls air through the hood but, instead of moving it outside, filters it and returns it to the room. The charcoal filter is the stage that handles odors in that loop. Without a functioning charcoal filter, a recirculating ventilator moves air but leaves cooking odors largely uncaptured. Replacing the filter on a regular schedule keeps the system doing the job it was installed to do.
This filter is matched to Broan ventilators rated at 260, 400, and 600 CFM when those units are operating in ductless mode. The SAP description references models 300SS, 400SS, and 600SSV, which correspond to the same ventilator family. If the ventilator in the installation is ducted and vents to the outside, a charcoal filter is not part of that configuration. This filter is for recirculating setups only.
