Most decorative grille finishes are designed to be seen: an Antique Brass or Satin Nickel panel announces itself as a material. Flat Black does the opposite. The matte surface absorbs light instead of returning it, so the eye reads the panel as shadow and negative space rather than as a physical object. In a painted cabinet with a dark interior, a flat black grille becomes nearly invisible, which is often exactly what a contemporary or industrial design calls for.
