Most wire grilles are built from round or square wire. Flat wire is different: each strand has a broad face and defined edges, so the light falls across a flat surface rather than curving around a cylinder. At every intersection the overlapping strands create a sharp recessed shadow, and that shadow line reads as a deliberate grid rather than a soft texture. The effect is more graphic and more structured than the same mesh pattern would look in round wire.
The 3/16 inch by 3/16 inch mesh compounds that character. At this spacing the openings are small relative to the wire face, so the panel reads as a mostly-solid surface interrupted by a tight, even grid. From a normal viewing distance it has more presence than a larger-mesh panel and less transparency. That makes it a practical choice for enclosures where the contents should be suggested rather than fully visible, and a strong decorative choice where the face of the panel is part of the room's geometry.
