This is an 18 inch full-extension side-mount ball bearing drawer slide from Knape and Vogt's 8450 series, rated 100 lb per pair, with an integrated Force Management soft-close damper and a classic zinc finish that blends into any cabinet interior.
The 8450 series is built for the high-use drawers that get opened and closed multiple times a day: pots-and-pans base drawers, spice pull-outs, bathroom vanity drawers, and shop utility drawers where a slammed close at the end of the day is the default. The Force Management damper catches the drawer well before it contacts the cabinet face and brings it down to a controlled stop, reducing wear on both the drawer box and the cabinet front. At 18 inches, the slide length suits a standard 18 inch nominal drawer depth — the kind found in a typical 24 inch deep base cabinet.
The 8450FMP 18 is cold-formed steel with a zinc electroplate. Zinc is the working standard for side-mount ball bearing slides: it resists the routine indoor humidity of a kitchen or bathroom without the premium of a coated or specialty finish. The zinc tone keeps the hardware unobtrusive when the drawer is open. This is a functional, interior-facing finish — it is not rated for exterior, marine, or wet washdown environments.
Cabinet shops running production kitchens will find the zinc 8450 a natural match for white, gray, or natural-finish cabinet interiors where a neutral hardware color matters and the soft-close feature is expected by the end customer. Contractors retrofitting existing frameless cabinets can swap plain ball bearing slides for this model without changing the drawer box, since the 1/2 inch side clearance and 18 inch length match the side-mount standard. Homeowners upgrading a single cabinet drawer get a soft-close result that matches the feel of higher-end cabinet lines.
No. A self-close slide uses an undamped spring to pull the drawer shut — useful, but it can still close with a thud. The 8450's Force Management damper catches the drawer in motion and decelerates it smoothly. The result is a controlled, quiet close regardless of how firmly the drawer is pushed.
Knape and Vogt recommends a maximum drawer width of 24 inches for the 8450 series. For wider drawers, step up to the 8850FM, which is built for drawers up to 42 inches.
Yes. In a face-frame cabinet the cabinet side is set back from the front frame, so the slide's rear end needs support. Add the matching KV rear mounting brackets — sold separately — to complete the install. In a frameless cabinet, the slide mounts directly to the flat cabinet side panel and no extra bracket is needed.
Poly-Pack means the pair of slides ships together in a sealed poly bag — one complete pair per bag with mounting hardware. It is the standard installation-ready unit for bench work, as opposed to a bulk carton pack.
No. KV lists zinc and anochrome as distinct finishes. The 8450FMP 18 is zinc. If your project specifies anochrome, confirm the finish code before ordering.
The KV 8450 series zinc soft-close slide delivers a 100 lb full-extension platform with genuine damped closing in a finish that works across the widest range of cabinet interiors — ordered by the pair and packaged to go straight to the bench.
