A pilaster system is the backbone of adjustable shelf storage. The strip mounts to the interior wall of a cabinet and accepts shelf pins at regular intervals, so shelves can be repositioned without drilling new holes or committing to a fixed layout. In a tall pantry or full-height base cabinet, a single 54-7/16 inch strip covers the usable interior height and gives you a continuous run of pin positions from top to bottom. That matters in pantry applications where one shelf level works for cereal boxes but needs to shift for a bulk cooking oil jug or a tall mixer.
The strip is made from natural maple, which reads as wood rather than painted metal or white plastic against a cabinet interior. In face-frame or frameless cabinetry finished in maple, cherry, or a similar warm tone, the pilaster recedes into the cabinet wall instead of calling attention to itself.
