A drawer slide spacer earns its place when the cabinet construction puts the slide mounting surface at the wrong depth or out of square with the drawer box. That happens most often in face-frame cabinets, where the frame stile sits proud of the cabinet side and the rear of the slide needs a support point that is not the cabinet back. It also comes up in production casework when a panel is dadoed, notched, or built up and leaves an uneven side wall.
