The Knape and Vogt 8908 Series is a 48 inch full-extension side-mount ball bearing drawer slide rated 500 lb per pair, with both a hold-in and a hold-out detent built into a single zinc-finished steel slide. It is engineered for heavy storage drawers, shop equipment, and industrial cabinets where the drawer needs to stay shut when closed and stay open when in use.
These two detents serve opposite jobs and are both present in the 8908 Series. The hold-in detent stops the drawer from drifting or rebounding open once it is pushed shut — useful on any heavy drawer that builds momentum on the closing stroke. The hold-out detent locks the slide at full extension until intentionally pushed back, so the drawer stays open while you load, unload, or sort contents without a free hand to hold it. This combination appears most often in shop, garage, and industrial environments where drawers carry real weight and must behave predictably in both positions. Note that neither detent is a keyed lock; both release with a deliberate push or pull, not a tool.
The slide members are cold-formed steel with a zinc electroplate finish. Zinc is the workhorse finish for heavy side-mount ball bearing slides: it provides indoor corrosion resistance without adding cost or changing the slide's dimensional tolerances. The zinc finish on the 8908 Series is a functional surface treatment — the slide sits beside the drawer box and is mostly out of sight in use. For wet, washdown, or outdoor environments, a corrosion-resistant grade would be the appropriate choice; this slide is rated for dry indoor service.
At 48 inches and 500 lb per pair, this slide is not a kitchen cabinet slide — it belongs in applications where load class is the governing spec. Shop base cabinets carrying heavy tooling, industrial storage units with drawers full of parts or fasteners, workbench drawers that double as work surfaces, and equipment drawers in professional trades environments are all natural fits. The 3/4 inch side clearance per side is wider than the standard 1/2 inch found on lighter-duty slides, so drawer boxes for this series need to be built to that clearance. In face-frame cabinet installations, rear mounting support is required; brackets for the 8908 Series are sold separately and are series-specific.
