Glazed cabinet doors need something to keep the glass in the frame cleanly, without a visible stop or an exposed fastener from the front. Grooved retainer does it by seating into a groove machined around the frame opening: the strip goes in behind the glass, the groove grips the strip, and nothing shows. That clean hold is the reason to choose this type, and it is also the requirement: the frame has to be machined for a groove before this retainer can do its job. Frames without a machined groove call for the stapled type instead. The two are not interchangeable.
Black is the practical default for painted frames and for stained frames in darker tones, where the retainer line is meant to read as a shadow rather than stand out. On a grooved installation the strip sits behind the glass and most of it is hidden, so color matters less than it does on a stapled installation where the strip is more visible.
