The Knape and Vogt 8150 series is a 16 inch side-mount ball bearing keyboard slide engineered for pull-out keyboard trays and work surfaces that need to stay exactly where they are set — fully open or fully closed — without drifting.
The 8150 series is sized and specified for keyboard tray applications: the 3/4 extension travel is appropriate for under-desk pull-outs where full extension is neither expected nor needed, and the dual-detent action solves the two problems that come up most often in this application. The hold-out detent keeps the tray fully extended while both hands are on the keyboard, and the hold-in detent prevents the tray from rolling open on its own when pushed shut. These are mechanical detents, not spring pulls or dampers — the tray stays in position until intentionally moved.
Steel members with a bright zinc finish are the standard material combination for side-mount ball bearing slides in office and cabinet work. The zinc protects the steel through years of dry indoor use. This finish is functional rather than decorative — it sits inside the desk or cabinet enclosure and is mostly out of view when the tray is closed. For applications where a darker finish is preferred, other finish options are available in this series.
The 8150 series works well in office furniture, dedicated keyboard tray inserts, built-in workstations, and shop benches where a slide-out surface needs to stay put. The 75 lb per pair rating is comfortable for a keyboard, mouse, and small monitor combination. The 16 inch slide length suits desks and workstations with moderate depth; confirm the interior depth of the enclosure before ordering, as the installation requires a few inches of clearance behind the slide at the rear. The poly-pack includes one pair with mounting hardware.
Hold-in keeps the tray in the closed position until intentionally pulled — the tray will not drift open on its own. Hold-out holds the tray in the fully extended position so it stays out while you work. Both are mechanical detents that release with a deliberate push or pull; neither is a spring-close or soft-close mechanism.
For most keyboard tray applications, yes. The tray extends to a comfortable working position in front of the desk edge. The rear portion of the slide stays inside the enclosure — this is by design, not a limitation, and it keeps the installation depth shorter than a full-extension slide would require.
Side-mount ball bearing slides in this class require nominally 1/2 inch of clearance per side between the tray and the enclosure sides. Build the tray platform 1 inch narrower than the inside opening to leave room for both slides.
It can, but face-frame construction places the cabinet side back from the front frame, so the rear of the slide needs support. Check whether the enclosure provides a rear mounting surface at the correct depth, or plan for rear mounting brackets to support the back end of the slide.
The poly-pack contains one pair of slides — two identical members, since the design is non-handed — along with mounting hardware, bagged together for the trade.
