When the face frame is thicker than expected, when a drawer stack runs slightly out of plumb, or when a factory slide spec calls for a mounting surface that sits behind the frame face, a 1/4 inch spacer restores the geometry without shimming with scrap or re-boring holes. The same spacer shows up in retrofit and replacement work — swapping out worn slides in an existing cabinet often means compensating for the original mounting arrangement rather than the current slide spec.
