Zinc Self-Close Drawer Slide For Drawers Under Counter Overhangs

The Knape and Vogt 8419 series is a 20 inch side-mount ball bearing drawer slide rated 100 lb per pair, built with 1 inch of over-travel and an integrated self-close spring. It belongs to the same 8400-series platform as the standard KV cabinet slide, adding two features that matter most to drawers fitted under worktops or behind deep face frames: travel that clears the overhang, and a spring that pulls the drawer fully shut on its own.

Key Features

• 1 inch of over-travel carries the drawer member past full extension, clearing countertop overhangs so the back of the drawer is actually reachable.
• Integrated self-close spring pulls the drawer fully shut once pushed within the capture zone, so the drawer never sits ajar.
• 100 lb rating per pair covers a loaded kitchen or utility drawer at this slide length.
• Non-handed design means both slides in the pair are identical, simplifying bench layout and installation.
• 1/2 inch side clearance per side matches the standard side-mount ball bearing format, so the box sizing formula is the same as any 8400-series install.
• Zinc-finished steel members resist indoor corrosion through years of daily service.

Where the Over-Travel Earns Its Keep

A standard full-extension slide stops at the cabinet face. Under a countertop overhang or in a deep face-frame opening, that still leaves the rear of the drawer hidden behind the lip. The 8419's 1 inch over-travel pushes the drawer member past that point, so the back contents are visible and reachable without fishing around. This is the scenario that drives most over-travel orders: kitchen drawers under a peninsula overhang, base cabinet drawers behind a thick face frame, or any install where the opening depth eats into accessible travel. The self-close spring pairs naturally here because a drawer that extends past full needs a positive return — without it, the drawer tends to idle halfway out after a distracted close.

Materials and Finish

The slide is cold-formed steel with a zinc plated finish. Zinc is the working standard for side-mount ball bearing slides: it handles the humidity and daily contact of an indoor cabinet environment without surface treatment concerns. This is a functional finish meant to stay out of sight beside the open drawer box — not a decorative surface. The zinc on the 8419 is the same finish found across the KV 8400 platform, so it is consistent in appearance if multiple slide series are used in the same cabinet run.

Who This Slide Is For

Cabinet shops and contractors fitting drawers in kitchens with overhang details will reach for the 8419 when a plain full-extension slide does not deliver true rear access. It is also a practical choice for renovation work: replacing an older slide in a base cabinet where the face frame depth reduces effective travel, or anywhere an interior designer has specified a handle-less base layout that relies on a clean, fully self-closing drawer. The 100 lb rating suits typical kitchen and utility drawers. The poly-pack format with mounting hardware included keeps the install moving on a multi-drawer job without sorting through bulk hardware.

The Right Slide When Standard Travel Falls Short

When the cabinet opening geometry clips the usable reach of a plain full-extension slide, the 8419 adds the inch of travel that puts the back of the drawer in hand — and then closes itself so nothing is left to chance.
