The Knape and Vogt 8419 Series is a 24 inch side-mount ball bearing drawer slide with over-travel action and an integrated self-close spring, rated 100 lb per pair. The zinc finish blends with the steel interior of most cabinetry and holds up through years of everyday use indoors.
Over-travel is the right choice any time the drawer opening is partially blocked by something in front of it. Under a countertop overhang, the drawer member travels 1 inch past the slide's nominal length so the back of the drawer clears the lip and becomes reachable. The same benefit shows up behind a deep face frame, where even a full-extension slide can leave the rear of the drawer partially hidden. The self-close spring adds to the practical value: push the drawer partway in and the spring takes over, pulling it home. That behavior is especially useful on drawers that get closed quickly — pots-and-pans drawers, utility drawers under a workbench — where a firm push is the typical close.
The slide is cold-formed steel with a zinc electroplate finish. Zinc is the working standard for side-mount ball bearing slides in cabinet and shop environments: it protects the steel through daily use indoors without adding bulk or changing the slide's profile. The finish is functional rather than decorative — it sits beside the drawer box, largely out of sight, doing its job quietly. This is not a stainless steel slide and is not intended for wet, washdown, or outdoor environments.
The 8419 series fits kitchen drawers under overhanging countertops, workshop drawers under a benchtop, and file or utility drawers anywhere a standard full-extension slide leaves the rear contents hard to reach. At 100 lb per pair it handles typical residential and light commercial loads. The non-handed format and 1/2 inch side clearance per side match the dimensions of most existing side-mount ball bearing installations, making the 8419 a direct upgrade path from a plain full-extension slide when the extra inch of travel would solve a reach problem. In face-frame cabinets, the back end of the slide needs support — add the matching rear mounting brackets, sold separately, before ordering.
Self-close. An integrated spring pulls the drawer fully shut once it enters the capture zone. There is no damper, so the close is positive rather than cushioned. If you want a damped close on a side-mount slide, look at the soft-close versions in this line.
The slide is 24 inches long and the over-travel action carries the drawer member 1 inch past that nominal length. Slide length and drawer travel are separate specs — this slide travels beyond 24 inches, not just to it.
No. The design is non-handed — both slides in the pair are identical and fit either side of the drawer.
1/2 inch per side. Build the drawer box 1 inch narrower than the cabinet opening to leave the correct clearance for each slide.
Yes, but the back end of the slide needs rear support. Add the appropriate KV rear mounting brackets — sold separately — before installation in face-frame construction.
If the reason drawers feel awkward is that the back stays hidden behind the countertop or frame, the extra inch of over-travel on the 8419 fixes that directly — paired with a self-close spring that keeps things tidy when the drawer is pushed shut.
