The Knape and Vogt 8850 series is an 18 inch full-extension side-mount ball bearing drawer slide rated 200 lb per pair, with Force Management soft-close damping and a zinc finish built to disappear inside the cabinet. This Bulk-Pack SKU is sized for shops and contractors specifying it across multiple drawers at once.
Standard 100 lb cabinet slides cover most kitchen and office drawers, but some applications routinely push past that class: deep pantry pull-outs stacked with canned goods, utility drawers in a contractor's shop, commercial cabinetry in a food-service prep area, or oversized bedroom drawers in a custom piece built to last decades. The 8850's 200 lb rating handles all of them without oversizing to an industrial heavy-duty slide. Full extension means the rear of a deep pantry box comes out completely, which matters when the drawer is 24 inches deep and the back row of shelved items actually needs to be reached. The 3/4 inch side clearance per side is larger than the standard 1/2 inch found on lighter KV series — build the drawer box accordingly when transitioning from the 8400 or 8450FM.
Zinc plating is the workhorse finish for side-mount ball bearing slides: it protects the steel members through years of indoor use, requires no special maintenance, and does not call attention to itself beside an open drawer. On a high-cycle cabinet — a frequently pulled pantry, a busy island drawer, a multi-user office pedestal — the finish holds up alongside the structural performance. This is not a decorative finish and is not rated for wet, outdoor, or marine environments. For those applications, specify a stainless slide instead. Inside a dry cabinet, zinc does exactly what it needs to do without adding cost.
The 8850 series is the correct call when the load class and the soft-close requirement arrive together. A designer specifying handle-less fronts on a heavy appliance garage, a cabinet shop running pantry boxes with pull-out shelves, or a contractor fitting a utility room with drawers that carry tools: each situation combines real weight with a preference for quiet, controlled closing. The Bulk-Pack format suits volume installations, keeping the per-pair cost down across a project. KV recommends a maximum drawer width of 42 inches for this series. In face-frame cabinets, rear mounting brackets are required; they are sold separately and are series-specific to the 8850.
The 8850 series requires approximately 3/4 inch of side clearance per side rather than the 1/2 inch used on the 8400 and 8450FM series. If you are replacing or upgrading existing slides in a cabinet already built for 1/2 inch clearance, the drawer box will need to be rebuilt or the cabinet side adjusted to accommodate the wider slide profile.
Force Management is KV's patented damping system using a cylinder with balanced spring technology. It is a true damped soft-close — the drawer is caught near the end of travel and settled shut silently — not a self-closing ramp or an undamped spring. The module is integrated into the slide and tested beyond 50,000 cycles.
Slide length and drawer travel are separate specs. The 18 inch figure is the closed length of the slide. Full extension means the intermediate member carries the drawer member approximately the full slide length, bringing the whole drawer box out to the cabinet face — but the slide length itself should be matched to the drawer depth and cabinet interior depth when sizing the installation.
Face-frame cabinets require rear mounting brackets to support the back of the slide, because the cabinet side is set back from the face frame. The brackets for the 8850 series are sold separately and are specific to this series — do not substitute brackets from the 8400 or 8500 line.
Bulk-Pack pricing and quantities are shown in the structured spec block on this page. Bulk-Pack format means the slides are packed loose in a carton rather than in retail polybags, which keeps per-unit cost down for shop and contractor orders.
When a project calls for 200 lb capacity and soft-close closing in a side-mount slide, the 8850FM in zinc delivers both in a non-handed, full-extension package sized for the bench and the budget of a working shop.
