The Knape and Vogt 8900 Series is a 12 inch full-extension side-mount ball bearing drawer slide rated 500 lb per pair, finished in zinc, and sold in bulk packaging for shops and contractors who install at volume. It is built for drawers that carry serious weight and need to travel the full slide length to deliver complete access to the cabinet interior.
Most side-mount ball bearing slides top out at 100 to 150 lb per pair — the right choice for kitchen cabinets and office drawers, but not for a tool chest, a parts bin, a server rack pull-out, or a commercial drawer loaded with heavy stock. The 8900 Series carries five times the standard class rating at 500 lb per pair. That headroom covers drawers that stay loaded all day, drawers that take hard use in a shop environment, and any application where a standard-class slide would be undersized from the start. This is a standard-motion slide: no soft-close damper, no self-close spring, no detent. The drawer runs free on steel ball bearings and stays wherever it is left.
Zinc plating over steel is the working standard for side-mount ball bearing slides in indoor environments. The finish handles the grease, dust, and humidity of a typical shop or commercial cabinet installation without corroding or pitting under normal use. It is a functional, hardworking finish on hardware that sits beside the drawer box rather than on display. This is not a decorative or stainless finish, and it is the right choice where performance matters more than aesthetics.
The 8900 Series 12 inch length suits shorter drawers: bench-top tool drawers, small cabinet bases, and pull-out trays in commercial millwork. The 3/4 inch side clearance per side is wider than the nominal 1/2 inch found on standard cabinet slides, so the drawer box must be built 1-1/2 inches narrower than the cabinet opening to accommodate both slides correctly. In face-frame cabinets, rear mounting brackets are required to support the back of the slide; brackets are series-specific and sold separately. The bulk carton format is aimed at shops and contractors stocking for multiple installs rather than a single-drawer project.
The 500 lb rating is per pair — one pair being the two slides that carry a single drawer. Do not double the number by counting each slide separately.
Yes. Full extension means the drawer member travels the full 12 inch slide length, bringing the entire drawer out to the cabinet face so nothing is blocked at the back.
No — the 8900 Series is a standard-motion slide with no closing mechanism. The drawer stays open until pushed, and stays closed until pulled. There is no soft-close damper and no self-close spring.
No. The design is non-handed, so both slides in a pair are identical and fit either side of the drawer.
The 8900 Series requires 3/4 inch of side clearance per side — wider than the 1/2 inch standard on most cabinet slides. Build the drawer box 1-1/2 inches narrower than the cabinet opening in total.
When the application calls for a 500 lb rated slide with full extension, zinc durability, and a non-handed format that installs cleanly in volume, the 8900 Series delivers — no extra mechanisms, no special handling, just capable hardware sized for the work.
