This is a 40 inch full-extension side-mount ball bearing drawer slide from Knape and Vogt's 8900 series, rated 500 lb per pair in a zinc finish. Built for drawers that carry genuine industrial or commercial loads, the 8900 series delivers full drawer access and a standard-motion, no-mechanism design that stays out of the way and holds up under repeated heavy use.
A 40 inch slide is not a kitchen drawer choice — it is the right tool for a deep workbench with steel parts inside, a commercial cabinet loaded with tools, or any institutional installation where the drawer depth and the carried weight both exceed what a standard 100 lb cabinet slide can handle. Full extension at this length means even the back of a deep, fully loaded drawer comes out to the cabinet face. The zinc finish blends quietly into the surrounding steel or painted interior, keeping the hardware functional without drawing attention to itself.
The 8900 series is built from steel with a zinc electroplate finish that provides reliable indoor corrosion resistance. Zinc is the working standard for heavy-duty side-mount ball bearing slides: it protects without adding bulk, and on a slide this size the priority is structural performance over aesthetics. The standard-motion design is a deliberate choice in this duty class — no soft-close damper, no spring, no detent means nothing to wear out or interfere with a high-cycle industrial workflow. The drawer rolls freely on steel ball bearings through its full travel on 3/4 inch of side clearance per side.
The 8900 series at 40 inches is the right fit for cabinet shops building out heavy workbench drawers, facilities teams installing industrial storage, and contractors sourcing slides for commercial casework where a 500 lb rating is the specification requirement rather than a precaution. If the project calls for a free-sliding heavy-duty slide in a deep box with a zinc finish, this is the size to specify. Note that this slide requires 3/4 inch of side clearance per side, so the drawer box must be built 1-1/2 inches narrower than the cabinet opening. In face-frame cabinets, rear mounting brackets are required for back support; those brackets are sold separately and must be matched to the 8900 series.
Standard kitchen and utility cabinet slides in this segment are rated in the 75–100 lb class per pair. The 8900 series at 500 lb per pair is a true heavy-duty industrial slide — not a marketing upgrade from a standard cabinet line.
No. The 8900B 40 is a standard-motion slide with no closing feature. The drawer rolls freely and stays wherever it is left. There is no damper, no spring, and no detent.
The 8900 series is a heavier-built slide at a higher load class, and its members are proportionally larger than a standard 100 lb cabinet slide. Build the drawer box 1-1/2 inches narrower than the cabinet opening to leave the required 3/4 inch per side.
No — 40 inches is the closed slide length. Because this is a full-extension slide, travel is approximately equal to the slide length, bringing the entire drawer clear of the cabinet opening. Slide length and drawer travel are separate specs.
Bulk-Pack means the slides ship loose in a carton without retail packaging, which is the standard for trade and volume orders. Confirm the sold-as unit — pair or each — before placing a volume order.
When the drawer is deep, the load is real, and the finish needs to hold up without fuss, the zinc 8900 series at 40 inches covers the specification cleanly — 500 lb capacity, full extension, standard motion, and no-mechanism reliability built into every pair.
