Zinc Soft-Close Ball Bearing Slides Built for Production Cabinet Work

This is a 12 inch full-extension side-mount ball bearing drawer slide from Knape and Vogt's 8450 FM series, rated 100 lb per pair, with an integrated Force Management soft-close damper and a bright zinc finish that blends into the cabinet interior. It ships in a bulk pack, sized for cabinet shops installing slides by the case rather than the pair.

Key Features

• Force Management (FM) soft-close — a patented dampening cylinder with balanced spring technology catches the drawer near closed and settles it silently, even under load.
• Full extension — the drawer clears the cabinet face completely, making the back of a 12 inch drawer reachable without digging.
• 100 lb rating per pair — handles a loaded kitchen, bath, or utility drawer with room to spare.
• Bright zinc finish — electroplated steel provides durable indoor corrosion resistance and a clean, neutral look beside the drawer box.
• Non-handed design — one part fits either side of the drawer, so there is no left/right sorting on the bench.
• Bulk-Pack format — loose in a carton for high-volume installs, without retail packaging that adds cost and slows staging.

Where the 12 Inch Length Earns Its Place

A 12 inch slide is the right call for shallow drawer runs: spice drawers, bathroom vanity drawers, small utility pulls, and any cabinet box where depth is limited. Full extension on a 12 inch slide means the entire box comes out to the face, so nothing gets lost at the back of a compact drawer. The FM soft-close operates across that full travel regardless of slide length, so shorter drawers close just as quietly as longer ones.

Zinc Finish in a Working Cabinet

Zinc electroplate is the functional standard for side-mount ball bearing slides installed indoors. It protects the cold-rolled steel members against humidity and contact corrosion through years of daily cycling, without a coating thick enough to affect fit or feel. On a 12 inch slide the zinc finish sits beside the drawer box in a narrow gap — it is not a decorative choice, it is the right material for the environment. These slides are for dry, indoor cabinetry. The zinc finish is not rated for wet, exterior, or high-humidity applications.

The Right Slide for Volume Cabinet Production

Cabinet shops building kitchens with shallow spice columns, bathroom furniture lines with compact vanity drawers, and contractors fitting out small-space kitchens all run through 12 inch soft-close slides at volume. The bulk-pack format matches that reality: pull from the carton, stage the pair, install, move on. The 8450 FM series meets KCMA, BHMA, and BIFMA performance standards, which matters when the work goes into a spec project or a production line with documented hardware requirements. The 1/2 inch side clearance requirement is consistent with standard side-mount slide practice, so the drawer boxes do not need any special sizing beyond the usual 1 inch width deduction from the cabinet opening.

Common Questions

Soft-Close Performance at Production Scale

When every drawer in a kitchen needs to close quietly and the slide count runs into the dozens, the 8450 FM bulk pack lets the work move without restocking delays. The FM soft-close carries its rated performance through the install and into daily use — consistent close, every drawer, every time.
