The Hettich KA 5632 is a 16 inch full-extension side-mount ball bearing drawer slide rated 90 lb per pair, built for shallow cabinet drawers, furniture pieces, and utility compartments where a shorter slide length is the right fit.
Not every drawer runs deep. Nightstand drawers, shallow vanity drawers, desk pencil drawers, and small base cabinet compartments all call for a slide in the 16 inch range rather than the 18 or 22 inch lengths that dominate a kitchen build. The KA 5632 fills those spots without asking you to oversize the drawer box or trim clearance into a longer slide. It is also a practical choice in replacement work: older furniture and cabinetry frequently used 16 inch slides, and this unit restores full-extension ball bearing performance where a worn or bent slide has been limiting travel. Standard motion means no closing feature, so the drawer stays wherever it is left — exactly the behavior you want in a pencil tray or display drawer that stays open during use.
Cold-formed steel members with a zinc plated finish make up both the cabinet and drawer profiles. Zinc is the working standard for side-mount ball bearing slides used indoors: it resists the light surface oxidation that comes with years of shop or kitchen humidity without adding the cost of a specialty finish. This is a functional, visible slide — it sits beside the drawer box when the drawer is open — so the zinc finish is appropriate for installations where the slide interior is not seen in everyday use. The standard-motion design carries no damper or spring mechanism, which keeps the slide straightforward to install and simple to service.
Cabinet shops and furniture builders who regularly encounter shallow drawers will want the 16 inch length on the shelf alongside longer sizes. Designers specifying small case pieces, nightstands, and bathroom vanities will find the 90 lb per pair rating sufficient for all standard contents. Homeowners replacing a failed slide in an older piece of furniture will match this length to the existing drawer box without modification. Because the slide is non-handed and full extension, one SKU covers the left and right side of any drawer, and the full-extension action is an upgrade over the partial-travel slides that came original in many older pieces.
Slide length is the closed dimension of the slide — 16 inches in this case. Because this is a full-extension slide, the drawer member travels approximately the full slide length, so the entire drawer clears the cabinet opening. A 3/4-extension slide of the same length would leave the back few inches of the drawer inside the cabinet. These are two separate facts, and full extension is the spec that sets the travel expectation.
Standard motion means the drawer has no self-close spring and no soft-close damper — it stays where you leave it and closes only when pushed. That is the right behavior for work trays, display drawers, and any compartment you expect to stay open. If you want the drawer to settle shut on its own, look at the soft-close variants in this family instead.
The slide requires 1/2 inch of clearance per side between the drawer box and the cabinet interior wall. Build the drawer box 1 inch narrower than the cabinet opening to leave the correct clearance for both slides.
No. The KA 5632 is non-handed, so both slides in a pair are identical. Order the quantity you need without sorting for left or right.
Side-mount slides in face-frame cabinets need support at the rear of the slide, since the cabinet side is set back from the face frame. Rear mounting brackets are required for face-frame installation and are sold separately. Confirm bracket compatibility with the KA 5632 series before ordering.
When the drawer is shallow and the application is straightforward, the Hettich KA 5632 delivers full-extension ball bearing performance at the 16 inch length that smaller drawers actually need.
