The Knape and Vogt 8505 series is a 16 inch side-mount ball bearing file drawer slide rated 150 lb per pair, with 1 inch of over-travel that carries the drawer past the cabinet face. It is designed for file drawers, lateral files, and heavy storage drawers installed beneath worktops or behind deep face frames where a full-extension slide would stop just short of where you need it.
A standard full-extension slide brings the drawer out to the cabinet face and stops. Under a countertop overhang — or behind a thick face frame — that landing point leaves the rear of the drawer hidden and hard to reach. The 8505's 1 inch of over-travel carries the drawer past the face, so hanging files at the back of a 16 inch lateral drawer are reachable without fishing. The same extra inch matters in built-in work surfaces where the cabinet sits recessed under a thick top. This is not a feature to spec on every drawer; it is the right call when the geometry demands it.
The slide is cold-rolled steel with a zinc finish throughout — the standard material and corrosion-protection combination for side-mount ball bearing slides in indoor service. Zinc plating is a functional finish: it protects the steel through years of normal use and stays out of sight beside the open drawer. This is not a stainless finish and is not rated for wet or outdoor environments.
Cabinet shops building office furniture and filing stations are the core audience: the 150 lb class covers a lateral file drawer fully loaded with folders, and the over-travel solves the worktop-clearance problem without custom joinery. Contractors fitting built-in cabinetry under countertops in home offices and libraries find the same combination useful. The 8505 is also the right step up when a 100 lb cabinet slide has been undersized for a drawer that actually gets loaded — the jump to 150 lb per pair removes that margin problem. KV recommends a maximum drawer width of 30 inches for the 8505 series. This poly-pack ships as one pair with mounting hardware included.
Full extension brings the drawer member out to the slide's nominal length — the drawer face aligns roughly with the cabinet face. Over-travel goes further: the 8505 carries the drawer 1 inch past that point, clearing overhanging tops and thick face frames.
Neither. The hold-in anti-rebound detent is a mechanical catch that keeps the drawer closed once it is pushed shut and prevents bounce-back. There is no spring pulling the drawer closed and no damper slowing it — the drawer stays where it is pushed.
Knape and Vogt recommends a maximum drawer width of 30 inches for the 8505 series — narrower than the 36 inch limit on the full-extension 8500. For lateral file drawers wider than 30 inches, verify the drawer dimensions before ordering.
The 8505 requires 1/2 inch of side clearance per side. Build the drawer box 1 inch narrower than the cabinet opening to give each slide its required clearance.
The slide itself installs the same way, but face-frame cabinets need support at the back of the slide. Add the matching KV rear mounting brackets — sold separately — to carry the slide's back end in face-frame construction.
When the drawer sits under an overhang, carries real weight, and needs to stay shut between uses, the 8505 covers all three requirements in a single non-handed pair rated for the job.
