That extra inch is the difference between digging for rear hanging folders and pulling them out cleanly. File drawers under worktops and lateral files built into peninsulas or islands are the primary use cases, but any drawer position where the front-cabinet clearance is tight benefits from the same geometry.
The 8505 is cold-formed steel throughout, with a zinc finish that handles the demands of office and shop environments. Zinc plating is the working standard for side-mount ball bearing slides — it protects the steel members against the corrosion and humidity of indoor service without adding bulk or weight. The 8505 is also rated for a maximum drawer width of 30 inches, compared to 36 inches on the 8500 — the over-travel mechanism reduces the recommended width slightly.
No. The hold-in anti-rebound detent is a mechanical catch that keeps the drawer closed and prevents it from bouncing back open after being shut firmly. There is no damper and no spring assist — the drawer does not slow down on the way in and does not pull itself shut. If you need a damped close on a file drawer, that is a different product.
The 8505 series requires 1/2 inch of side clearance per slide, which means the drawer box should be built 1 inch narrower than the cabinet interior opening. This is the same clearance as the standard 8500 series.
Slide length and travel are separate specs. The 18 inch figure is the closed length of the slide. Travel exceeds that by 1 inch thanks to the over-travel mechanism. Match slide length to your cabinet's interior depth in the standard way — the over-travel is in addition to, not instead of, the full slide travel.
