This is a 20 inch over-travel side-mount ball bearing file drawer slide from Knape and Vogt's 8505 series, rated 150 lb per pair with 1 inch of travel beyond full extension and a hold-in anti-rebound detent that keeps the drawer from bouncing back open.
A standard full-extension slide stops at the cabinet face. Under a countertop overhang or behind a tall face frame, that means the back of the drawer is still partially blocked. The 8505's 1 inch of over-travel moves the drawer past that point, giving clear access to hanging files at the rear. It is the right choice for a built-in lateral file beneath a desktop, a base cabinet topped by a thick stone countertop, or any installation where the cabinet opening sits behind the finished face plane. The hold-in anti-rebound detent is equally relevant here: a heavy drawer full of folders tends to rebound after being pushed shut, and the detent catches it every time without needing a damper or spring.
The 8505 series is constructed from steel with a zinc finish, the standard protective coating for side-mount ball bearing slides in indoor service. The slide profile reaches 3.79 inches including the quick-disconnect rail, a taller footprint than a standard cabinet slide, which is appropriate for the load class and drawer width it covers. Zinc is a functional, non-decorative finish; it is not stainless and is suited to dry indoor environments.
The 8505 series is designed for file drawers, lateral files, and heavy storage drawers that demand more than the 75–100 lb cabinet class can offer. KV recommends a maximum drawer width of 30 inches for this 1 inch over-travel model. The slide requires 1/2 inch of side clearance per side, so the drawer box is built 1 inch narrower than the cabinet opening. In face-frame cabinets, the back of the slide needs rear mounting bracket support; KV series-specific rear brackets are sold separately. This Poly-Pack ships one pair with mounting hardware included.
From full extension. The slide already extends approximately its 20 inch nominal length at full open; the drawer member then continues 1 additional inch past that point to clear overhangs.
The detent is a mechanical catch that holds the closed position — it neither pulls the drawer shut nor slows the close. Push the drawer shut and the detent keeps it there. There is no damper and no spring; this is not a soft-close or self-close slide.
No. The 8505 is non-handed — both slides in the pair are identical and mount to either side of the drawer.
Knape and Vogt recommends a maximum drawer width of 30 inches for the 8505 series. For wider drawers, the full-extension 8500 series supports up to 36 inches.
Face-frame installations need rear mounting brackets to support the back of the slide — the cabinet side sets back from the opening in face-frame construction. KV series-matched rear brackets for the 8505 are sold separately.
Pair the 150 lb class rating with 1 inch of over-travel and a stay-closed detent, and the 8505 series covers the demanding end of file and lateral drawer installations where standard cabinet slides fall short.
